An advocacy visit led by Mrs. Joy Ijuwo, Executive Director of Okaha Women and Children Development Organisation (OWACDO), sought to gain the support of the Benue State Budget and Economic Planning Commission in the fight against tuberculosis (TB). The visit was part of the ongoing efforts by the TB Northern Nexus Cluster, a coalition of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) from six northern states of Nigeria. The cluster is currently implementing a USAID-Palladium-funded project aimed at improving access to and quality of TB service delivery through increased domestic investment.
Call for Budget Implementation and Private Sector Support
During the visit, Mrs. Ijuwo called for the Commission’s backing to ensure at least 50% of the 2024 TB budget allocation is implemented. She also emphasized the need for the renovation of Directly Observed Treatment (DOT) centers across Benue State. Highlighting the importance of domestic investment, she urged the private sector to play an active role in funding TB programs, which is critical for sustaining the fight against the disease.

Response from the Planning Commission
Mr. Jerome Andohol, Director General of the Benue State Budget and Economic Planning Commission, responded positively to the advocacy. He expressed his willingness to support the TB cause and acknowledged the State Government’s commitment to health programs, including TB. Mr. Andohol directed that a memo be drafted for the immediate release of TB funds to support various programs. This move is expected to bridge the funding gap left by dwindling international support and ensure continued progress in TB case finding, screening, diagnosis, and treatment.
