Introduction
On Sunday, June 16th, we celebrated the Day of the African Child. This significant occasion honors the resilience and perseverance of African children facing numerous challenges.
The Challenges Faced by African Children
Despite the Universal Basic Education Policy in Nigeria, over 20 million children lack access to free, quality, and compulsory basic education. This year’s theme, “Education for All Children in Africa: The Time is Now,” highlights the urgent need for governments to prioritize the education of African children. Ensuring that every child, regardless of their background, has access to education is not just a fundamental right but a crucial step towards sustainable development.
Discussion on Brothers FM, Makurdi
On this notable day, OWACDO’s Executive Director, Laz Mom (Chair of BENGONET), and Dr. Beatrice Onoja (Executive Director of GTM) discussed these issues on Brothers FM, Makurdi. They emphasized the importance of governmental and non-governmental efforts to advocate for and implement policies that guarantee quality education for all children in Africa.
Conclusion
The Day of the African Child is a call to action. It reminds us that the fight for the rights and education of African children must continue with renewed vigor. OWACDO is dedicated to advocating for these rights and ensuring every child has access to education. Together, we can build a better future for the African child.
