Ending menstrual poverty is one of the priority areas of the Okaha Women and Children Development Organisation (OWACDO). This year’s theme, “Together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld,” highlights our commitment to ensuring menstrual health and hygiene for all.
Our School Visits
Recently, we had the privilege of visiting LGEA Primary School and UBE Secondary School. During these visits, our team engaged with the students, providing them with essential information and addressing common misconceptions about menstruation. We covered several critical topics, including:
- Misconceptions on Menstruation: Dispelling myths and providing accurate information.
- Get the Facts Right: Educating girls on the biological and health aspects of menstruation.
- The Role of Boys and Men in Menstrual Health: Encouraging boys and men to support menstrual health and hygiene.
- Physical Hygiene During Menstruation: Teaching girls how to maintain proper hygiene during their periods.
- Safe Disposal of Menstrual Products: Highlighting the importance of environmentally safe disposal methods.
Highlight of the Activities
The highlight of our activities was the recitation of the Menstrual Pledge, a moment of unity and empowerment for the girls. This was followed by the distribution of free menstrual pads. We are proud to announce that we reached two thousand girls with our free pads, ensuring they have access to essential menstrual products.
Extending Our Reach
Our efforts didn’t stop at the schools. We also conducted a comprehensive radio program, reaching over ten thousand people across Benue State. The program was translated into three major local languages: Tiv, Idoma, and Igede, ensuring that our message of menstrual health and hygiene reached a diverse audience.
A Period-Friendly World
At OWACDO, we believe that everyone deserves access to menstrual products and education about menstrual health. By addressing menstrual poverty and fostering a period-friendly world, we are helping to put smiles on the faces of countless girls and women.
Together, we can break the stigma surrounding menstruation and create an environment where every girl can manage her period with dignity and confidence. Join us in our mission to make the world a better place for all girls and women.
Conclusion
OWACDO’s initiative is more than just a campaign; it’s a movement towards a more inclusive and supportive community. By educating and providing resources, we are making significant strides towards ending menstrual poverty. Let’s continue to work together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.
