We are thrilled to share some exciting news from our recent visit to the Honorable Commissioner of Women Affairs and Social Development. Okaha Women and Children Development Organization (OWACDO), as an executive member of the Civil Society Scaling Up Nutrition in Nigeria (CS-SUUN), has been diligently working towards enhancing nutrition services in Benue State in line with the mandates given to CS-SUUN by UNICEF.

During our meeting, we advocated for the following:
i. allocation & release of funds for implementation of nutrition interventions
ii. extension of maternity leave for nursing mothers to 6 months with pay (up from the current 3 months)
iii. approval and funding for the Benue Startegic Plan of Action for Nutrition
iv. establishment of nutrition departments in all MDAs
v. availability of fortification initiatives to fund affordable; nutritious foods
We are delighted to announce that our efforts have yielded significant results:
Inclusion of Nutrition in the 2024 Budget: The Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development has taken a proactive step by incorporating nutrition into its budget for the year 2024. This crucial decision underscores the government’s commitment to addressing malnutrition in Benue State.
Assurance of Budget Release: Furthermore, the Ministry has provided assurance that the allocated budget for nutrition will be released promptly, ensuring the implementation of essential nutrition interventions.
These achievements mark significant progress towards our goal of combating malnutrition and promoting the well-being of women and children in Benue State.
It was most encouraging to us that despite facing challenges such as repairs to the ministry’s facilities; unavailable electricity supply and inadequate facilities for our reception, the Commissioner, the Permanent Secretary, and the Director of Planning, Research, and Statistics still gave us a befitting reception as allowed by the circumstances.
We remain committed to our mission and look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts to ensure access to nutritious foods and extended maternity leave for nursing mothers in Benue State.
Stay tuned for more updates on our progress as we strive to create a healthier and more prosperous future for all. Together, we can make a difference!
